Same Sex Marriage: A Very Unique Story

Recently I was extremely privileged to be asked to be the wedding celebrant for the same sex marriage of Kelly and Kelly. This wedding was going to be very special because of the journey they had both been on together.

A Very Unique Story

More than 10 years ago Kelly and Kelly were married as husband and wife. The marriage ended and following a gender change they realised the love they shared was undeniable, so they rekindled their relationship and decided to have a same sex marriage – and become wife and wife.

This very unique story continues because Kelly Ellis is hoping to become just the second transgender person in New Zealand to stand as an MP (Georgina Beyer being the first). Kelly is contesting the Whangarei Labour seat in the General Election in September this year.

Same Sex Marriage Ceremony

TV3’s ‘Third Degree has been following this unique story and filmed the wedding ceremony at The Langham – watch the story here.

The wedding ceremony itself was such a wonderful occasion with an amazing energy and buzz. There were around 100 guests present who watched the two attendants walk in followed by the two beautiful brides, Kelly and Kelly, who walked down the aisle together. Both of them Shakespearean lovers, they chose the Shakespearean Sonnet 116 reading which was read by their actor transgender friend – it was an extremely moving rendition.

I am so proud to live in a country like New Zealand that treats same-sex couples identical to opposite sex couples in terms of their rights and obligations of marriage. Isn’t it wonderful that gender no longer forms the basis of marriage – instead it’s all about the love of two adults…any two adults!

If you are considering your same sex marriage or opposite sex marriage please contact me to discuss your perfect day.
