A Christmas Wedding

Have you ever thought about having a Christmas wedding?  More and more people are choosing the festive season to get married. There are plenty of reasons that couples see this as being the perfect time of year for their wedding.

A Beautiful Christmas Wedding

A couple of years ago I performed a beautiful wedding on Christmas Day for Paul and Judy Greatbatch.  There was to be a large family reunion on that day and all of their family travelled from far and wide for the event.  My couple had been thinking about getting married for some time and decided what could be better than to have their surprise wedding in front of all of their family.  So with only a select few in on the big secret, the plans for the family reunion were put into place.

At the appointed time everyone was gathered on the back lawn for a supposed ‘activity’.  The music struck up and the beautiful bride was escorted up the side path to join both her groom and myself under a gorgeous arch of flowering trees. Each and every person was totally surprised when they saw the bride walking up, as until that time no one suspected that they would be witness to a romantic wedding.  This truly was a magical wedding!  Everyone agreed what a perfect ending to a wonderful family reunion, and one they will never forget.

Choose a Wedding Date

That being said, if you are considering a Christmas wedding consider Christmas Eve, Boxing Day, or a few days either side of those dates for the wedding date.  A wedding on Christmas Day is normally not recommended (exception to the rule above).  This is because your family, but particularly your friends, may view the invite as rude because you are asking your guests to give up their special day with loved ones.  Once the date is set send save the date cards or invitations to your guests as early as possible – it’s a busy time of the year with people making travel plans early and there are parties/events to consider.

Ideas to create a Christmas themed Wedding Ceremony & Reception

  • Consider colour themes for dresses, decor, venues and invitations such as red/green, or silver/white, or burgundy/forest green/gold, or gold/cream.
  • Decorate a Christmas tree with lots of decorations in your chosen colour theme.
  • Get a piece of mistletoe and affix to guest napkins using ribbon/string.
  • Fill Christmas crackers, gift bags or baubles with lollies and use for favours.
  • Make Santa or festive bauble themed place card holders.
  • Place sparklers and Christmas crackers on guests tables, and sprinkle snowfetti or metallic confetti
