2013 Outdoor Wedding Trends

With the Wedding season in full swing and with the gorgeous weather that we have been experiencing – my thoughts go to the locations. Almost without exception my lovely couples have chosen outdoor wedding locations.

Beautiful settings for wedding ceremonies and receptions can be imagined and created for outdoor weddings. Outdoor Wedding Trends are always evolving and changing.

Here are the best 2013 Outdoor Wedding Trends

1. Backdrops

2013 Outdoor Wedding Trend is BackdropsThis is probably the hottest of the outdoor wedding trends – the wedding backdrop. Gone are the days of arches and gazebos as creative and decorative backdrops create the perfect setting. Styles for backdrops behind the couple include:

  • Curtain backdrop (curtains open or closed)
  • Hang wedding theme coloured fabric strips of different lengths
  • Find two old door frames from a demolition yard and decorate with flowers or fabric
  • Drape curtains through a low hanging branch of a tree
  • Hang the aisle runner up on a horizontal pole behind the couple and let it run right down to the end of the aisle

2. Draping

2013 Outdoor Wedding Trend is DrapingDrape sheer or light linen type fabrics to create a warm and romantic setting.  Simply create swags by draping over/around frames, poles or trees.

I performed an amazing wedding last week at Kariotahi beach. The wedding planner created a beautiful beach setting using 4 posts with draping and flowers. A woven mat covered the sand within the posts and shells lined the centre aisle and on either side the guests sat on lovely white draped chairs.

3. Back to Nature

Very recently I performed a ceremony at Hunua Falls.  Standing with the Falls behind us and beneath tall native trees, this was indeed a very magical and spiritual setting.

4. Hanging Decorations

The great thing though is this can be extremely cost effective as some decorations such as paper lanterns are inexpensive, and others can be made DIY styles for example paper garlands, streamers and bunting. For a rustic theme fill old style glass milk bottles with flowers or decorations and hang from tree branches.

5. Wedding Ceremony Seating

2013 Outdoor Wedding Trend is Alternative Seating Transform your wedding ceremony setting with non-traditional seating. Instead of wooden or plastic chairs think about your setting and get creative.

  • Try covered hay bales at a rustic or farm setting
  • Use vintage couches, benches or pews to create an interesting look
  • For a beach wedding lay down a large piece of fabric that covers the length of the aisle and position large cushions for guests to lounge on
